About the instructor- Lisa Varnes-Epstein MHS, PA-C, CPM/LM received her initial training in Social Work spending her time reaching out to adjudicated youth in a program modeled after Outward Bound. She went on to expand her horizons spending 2 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone, West Africa. She returned to the United States looking for a place to land in medicine and found her way into the Physician Assistant Program at Duke University where she was first given the opportunity to combine her love of travel, integrative medicine, and patient empowerment. She spent her first two years of practice in a rural “frontier” medicine clinic in deep West Texas where she and husband Michael found themselves pregnant with their first child and few options for birth attendants committed to physiologic birth. An 8 hour drive to a San Antonio modified home birth secured their foray into homebirth and set the stage for her ultimate commitment to out of hospital birth, midwifery, global midwifery education and family practice.
Lisa is an adjunct professor in the Midwifery Studies Program at Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, WI, conducts NRP classes designed specifically for out of hospital birth providers and provides part time coverage for the LaFarge Clinic birth room and the local community hospital Urgent Care department. She has served women in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Haiti and Guatemala. She is also a certified Arvigo Therapytm practitioner, a modality she incorporates into her care for women of all ages. In her quiet moments you can find her walking on her land or in the garden cultivating the next meal and dreaming of distant lands, high adventure and friends yet unmet.
